Well, as luck would have it, the challenge at Simon Says Stamp and Show this week is... anything goes. I just finished up a piece that will fit quite nicely in that theme...lol.
I'm quite taken with the work of Anna Dabrowska, aka Finnabair to those familiar with her work. Stunning designs, awesome colors, sometimes total steampunk...right up my alley. lol. Anyways, I decided to try my hand at her style. Basically, I had a bunch of left over bits and pieces, aka "crap", and started "gluing stuff all over the place". I remembered the before photo!! Whoop!
No, it's not you, the photo is a little blurry. Check it, does that look like a hot mess or what?? Grungeboard pieces, grungepaper rolled roses painted colors I didn't like, odd paper flowers, plastic greenery from Christmas, lace, and other weird stuff. The board that serves as the base is some of that never ending "substrate" I have.
Here's the finished piece...couple of shots and angles..I never claimed to be a photographer.
Yes, not quite glued down to the black background, but I thought you could look past that. The sentiment is a metal embellishment I've had for quite some time. I knew I was going to use it from the beginning, so I made the mount for it. Other angle:
Probably darker than it should be, but for a first attempt at this style, I didn't think it was too awful. My procedure was to cover everything with gesso, some of it took a couple of coats, then I broke out Sailboat Blue and Butterscotch colorwash, and some old Maya Mist in brown and black, and sprayed away. Spritzed water here and there to blend the colors, kept a paper towel handy for sopping up excess color, and just kept going till I was happy with it. After I dried it completely, like, overnight, I dry brushed some white acrylic paint on to highlight and rubbed some Treasure Gold - Spanish Topaz, on some areas...you can see that better in the first finished photo.
So, there you have it! Check out the challenge over at Simon Says Stamp and Show, a $50 voucher to a random winner!
